For centuries, the land along the Adriatic coast between the cities of Split and Trogir was the site of conflict between the nobles of Split and Trogir, who built family castles and chapels in the area.
Following the invasion of the Ottomans, the population moved from the old Croatian parishes on the slopes of the Kozjak mountain down to the castles along the Kaštela Bay. The castles developed into small fortified settlements - seven unique villages that make up the town of Kaštela: Sućurac, Gomilica, Kambelovac, Lukšić, Stari, Novi and Štafilić.
The local population says that the number seven is significant for the city of Kaštela because, apart from the fact that the town consists of seven villages, seven castles, seven winds blow in Kaštela: bura, jugo, mistral, tramuntana, oštro, levant, and levićada. One can see seven mountain peaks of Kozjak from the bay: Putalj, Veli Vrj, Koludar, Biranj, Malačka, Opor, and Trečanica.
Each Kaštela village has a square, a local church, and a castle. The castle and square were in the past connected by a drawbridge, as it has been preserved to this day on the example of the Vitturi castle, where the town museum is located.
There are many more than just seven reasons why you should visit Kaštela. Check out some of the reasons HERE or contact us for more information.
