The castles and villas of Kaštela

Imagine the times when ancient Roman rulers of the “known world” had the opportunity to choose a place for their villas and castles. You could choose to have a villa at the green hills of Tuscany or next to the turquise sea of le Cote d’Azur. But yet again, the Romans chose Dalmatia and Kaštela for their Villas. Due to the turbulent history of Dalmatia they didn’t stand the test of time. After the Romans came the Croatian Kings, Ottomans, Venetians, and many more.

Furthermore, evidence of that are 7 castles that were made to defend the citizens of 7 small towns. Each of the 7 had its own castle, some of them are nowadays residences, some are museums and some do not exist.

Castle (Kaštel) Vitturi

The most beautiful and the most up-kept kaštel is the Kaštel Vitturi. Two brothers Jerolim and Nikola Vitturi built the castle around the end of the 15th century. They constructed a high building on the cliff by the sea as a defensive palace. It was to guard the city against Ottoman invasions that ended in the late 17th century. Afterwards it was renovated as a residence for the wealthy families of Trogir and Kaštela.

Nowadays, the Kaštel Vitturi is a Museum of the city of Kaštela. An easy five minute walk is enough for you to reach Kaštel Vitturi from Hotel Štacija. Furthermore, the museum has many departments and exhibitions ready for you to visit. From contemporary art to prehistoric artifacts there is most certainly something for you to see.
